Frequently Asked Questions

Who can volunteer?

PEARLS is open to accepting women and men volunteers of all ages and walks of life. Of course, applications are carefully reviewed and include background checks for the safety and security of the girls. Mostly, we are looking for positive adult role models who can model the PEARLS attributes of Personal responsibility, Empathy, Awareness of self and others, Respect, Leadership and Support. Volunteers must be positive, progressive thinkers who believe in their own personal power and who can translate that belief into meaningful action.

Volunteers who are comfortable working and communicating with teen girls are essential. It is also critical that volunteers be open to diverse cultures and to building their own multicultural competency skills.

What volunteer opportunities exist?

PEARLS needs adults who are willing to help girls prepare and apply for college, coordinate and chaperone field trips, assist in the office and share a variety of specific professional skills. Volunteers can also assist with fund raising events, design their own fund raising events, sign up for our Speakers Bureau and much more. PEARLS can work with you to help find the right fit. What kind of training and support is offered to PEARLS volunteers?

To ensure the success of volunteers, PEARLS hosts periodic two-hour training sessions for groups of volunteers. Training is scheduled after a volunteer application has been checked and accepted. Volunteers will also enjoy the support of PEARLS fulltime Operations and Volunteer Coordinator, Kathy Landry. Kathy has worked for PEARLS since its inception and has a deep understanding of the organization, girls we serve, and issues we face. Kathy has received specialized volunteer management training from the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee. Email Kathy with questions.

What sort of time commitment do volunteers make?

Volunteer opportunities range from one-time commitments to ongoing specific support. It really depends on your availability and how you want to help. Look over our job descriptions to determine the opportunity that best suits your schedule.
